Keep the kids entertained in Colchester this May

Published by Harj Grewal

With two bank holidays and a school half term, May offers the perfect opportunity for families to spend some quality time together. So, if you’re seeking ways to keep the kids smiling and full of beans this May 2019, here’s what’s happening in and around The Rose and Crown Hotel Colchester.

  1. Monster Mash Up at the National History Museum
For an inexpensive free day out, families can visit Colchester’s Natural History Museum, winner of the 2019 Hoop Awards. The museum is already a popular place with children because of its many interactive exhibits and displays, but the museum is also renowned for its children’s workshops and activities. During May half term the museum is hosting a Monster Mash Up event on Wednesday 29th May, where kids can come along and get crafty creating a monster inspired by the mythology discovered throughout the museum. Places are free but must be reserved in advance via the museum’s website.
  1. Kids run the railway at East Anglian Railway Museum
On Saturday 11th May the East Anglian Railway Museum is offering children the chance to get hands on and take control of train operations, with supervision from the museum’s many local volunteers. From operating the crossing gates, to taking on the role of train guard, children will be able to get an all-access insight into the inner workings of East Anglian Railways’ trains. You’ll also be able to ride a vintage diesel train and enjoy admission to the museum all day long. Children will need to be accompanied by one adult who can enter for free. Additional adult tickets cost £7 and each child’s entry is £12.
  1. Planetarium at Colchester Castle
Suitable for children aged 4 years and above, planetarium at Colchester Castle is a one-day interactive workshop, where children can join in one of five 45-minute sessions throughout the day on Thursday 28th The workshops will enable children to learn the secrets of our skies’ galaxy, including identifying constellations, as well as planetary themed crafts and activities to participate in. Places are free but must be booked in advance, and museum ticket admission charges still apply. For more details visit https://cimuseums.org.uk/
