Most guests walk through our reception without realising what’s just a few steps away.
Down a staircase, tucked quietly beneath The Rose and Crown Hotel, is something you wouldn’t expect to find in one of the oldest buildings in Colchester…
A former prison.
The cells were originally used to hold prisoners being transported around the country. Guards would stay upstairs in the hotel, enjoying a comfortable room, while the prisoners were locked in a cell below.
Walk down there today and it’s easy to imagine the tension. The air feels cooler, the walls are thick and the prison cell doors have multiple names etched into the wood. Things like this really bring this history to life.

The best part? You don’t have to just imagine it. The staircase is right in reception, and guests are more than welcome to wander down and explore.
Over the years, we’ve preserved the space carefully, keeping the cells intact while adding a few touches from the past for you to enjoy.
Our prison is one of Colchester’s hidden gems – an unexpected piece of history that makes a stay here unforgettable.

Of course, there’s one story that everyone wants to know about. Rumour has it that the infamous Essex highwayman Dick Turpin spent time in these very cells.
Standing in this historic prison under The Rose and Crown Hotel, it’s easy to imagine him pacing the stone floors, tallying the days and plotting his next move – and understand why his legend still captivates visitors today.

Today, the space is used as a meeting room, making it arguably the most unique meeting room in Colchester. It’s certainly memorable – your meetings might even come with a little added history lesson.
It feels surprisingly welcoming and provides a really private space.

Colchester is full of history, but few buildings have a secret like The Rose and Crown Hotel.
For visitors searching for hidden history, secret places, or buildings with prisons, this hotel is definitely worth a visit – it’s certainly one of Colchester’s hidden gems.
